J. Crew Inspired Skirt DIY Tutorial

Inspired by J. Crew's Box Pleated Crepe Skirt from this post, I decided to make something similar with a longer length.

Fabric: Joann's, bottomweight, polyester, 1 yard

Difficulty: Easy to Intermediate

Time: 1.5-2 hrs

Interested in making one?  Here are the steps:

What You Need:

  • 1 yard of fabric
  • Interfacing optional
First, cut your waistband and 2 skirt panels:

Click here for how I insert an invisible zipper.

See here or here for great tutorials around the web.

I know this might look a little daunting, but it honestly is not that bad when you actually do it!

  1. Instructions are very clear. They do seem daunting but I'm sure if someone took their time, it'd be as easy as you say :). Love the skirt, very versatile!

  2. Thanks for the instructions. I always wanted to add pockets to my skirts, but never thought about how to do so. Your instructions are very clear and doesn't seem too hard to work with. I'll definitely give this a shot with some fabric I picked up last month.

  8. Simple and classic style! This skirts looks totally looks daunting to sew though. I think my first sewing skirt project took me 10 hours! Those little pleats by the waistband look hard to do....

  12. Not sure if you are still responding to comments, but I was wondering how the top of the zipper looks on the waistband. I'm an advanced sewer so this doesn't seem too hard, I'm just having a hard time picturing how the waistband would look for your last few steps.

    1. I do, but it just takes me a lonnnng time :(

I use invisible zippers for these kinds of projects, so the zipper essentially just ends at the top of the waistband without any further adjustments. I know many people add a hook & eye at the top, but I tend not to (laziness).

Thank you for commenting and hope that helps! Happy to snap a photo and email to you if that's helpful!
