Polka Dot Skirt DIY

Still thinking of the J. Crew Elinor dress (fitting room review here), I was delighted to see this blue / white polka dot fabric on sale.  I thought about making my own version of the dress but decided to opt for a skirt instead to pair with various tops.

I'm currently obsessed with green / blue combinations and wanted to give it a try with the resulting skirt.  I fell in love with this blouse when I saw it on Jean here, but went to the store too late to buy it.  One day, I found what must have been a return and snapped it up.  I love the vibrant green!

I'll need to post a better picture of the skirt in the future because you can't really see the box pleats.  I'd also like to play around with different pairings like the gingham / dot combo in this Pinterest image (repinned from Aubrey).

When it comes to dots, do you like pairing them with solids or prints?

  1. Love love love. Can't wait to see the skirt up close. You do an amazing job. Have you ever considered giving people the option to have you make items that you blog about for a price of course....or maybe that's too much work?

    2. Aw, thanks Annie! I've thought of it, but sometimes I question if the quality of my work is sellable level. Better to be conservative than disappoint people but I hope to some day!

  5. great skirt! love what you did with it. i used to wear lots of solid colors with polka dots, but now i'm bolder and love to mix and match different prints. brown shoes are a good choice when it comes to blue and green color. :)

  6. You whipped up that skirt so quickly! Looks adorable. If I wore dots, I like to keep other things solid. I'm not that adventurous!

    1. Haha, real time and blog time are very different! I tried on the J. Crew version a week and a half before I made the skirt but I had other posts already ready :D

  7. The skirt is totally cool and fun! I cannot believe you did that so fast! My sewing machine is a $25 one from target that keeps chugging. I need an upgrade. The most I did was when I was on bedrest. I made cushions for my window seat and that took like 2 weeks to make. (hand sewn and a few broken needles).

    1. Thanks Helen! I'm loving my Singer Heavy Duty from Amazon! I think it was something like the low $100s and it works SO much better than my previous Walmart cheapie. I highly recommend it!

  9. Now that my obsession with gingham is finally waning, I think I need more polka dots in my life :)

Love the length and the pleats of the skirt on you. Paired with the vibrant green top it's so feminine and perfect for spring!

  10. I don't have a polka dot skirt I just realized...And I also don't have a polka dot dress. I have only a top and I've worn it once...I hope I can find it. This is a really nicely made skirt and the top looks great :)

  14. actually, this outfit reminds me of this pin: http://pinterest.com/pin/30469734948688067/ except w/polka dots! hey, why not?!

i also like the mixing of the polka dots & gingham of that pic, but it primarily works bc it's the same shade of blue.

    1. Ooh, love her combo! I still haven't tried the 2 on together. I think because I'm worried I'll look silly rather than anything like the pinned photo :D
