This week's sewing project is a mini-capelet made of a blue and black houndstooth (LOVE the color and print!) material. To make your own, use Butterick B5395 view A with a shortened length and a cozy, vibrant fabric. Though the pattern shows a multi-button capelet, I preferred to do one dramatic button at the collar.
As far as styling goes, I know I should probably pair this with a skinnier pant but I really wanted a grey bottom and only had trouser styles. How would you wear this?
A close-up view:
Do you watch Glee? I can so see Emma Pillsbury wearing something like this. Or maybe pair it with a cute a-line, swingy skirt. Great job with this DIY!
ReplyDeletegood job on the cape! i love the houndstooth fabric. i wasn't quite sure on how to style it either since i have never worn one. heehee i googled it and thought these models are totally rocking it!

Cee - I'm a huge Glee fan / "Gleek"! Kerry of LittleNashua and I love Emma's style though Kerry channels her much better :) Thanks for the suggestion! I'll have to try that!
ReplyDeletePing - Thanks so much! And thanks also for the image link - I love seeing different ways to wear things like this!
I've been thinking about capelets lately - there is one on thefifteendollarstore.com that I kind of like (if you have never been to that website it's a discount retailer for juniors clothes that are several seasons old).
ReplyDeleteThis does remind me of the Kate Spade coat Emma wore in one episode (it had a similar shape). I would wear it with a pencil skirt to slim the lower part of the body. A gray pencil skirt takes about 2 hours to make if you have the right pattern...(you see where I am going with this).
Wow! You did such a good job here! I especially love the print you chose, what an interesting combination but so fun! I can't wait to see you style it because I don't know how to style capelets either!
ReplyDeleteSo swingy and chic! Great job as usual on this DIY : ) I would agree that skinnier pants would probably balance out the swingyness, but I also like Kerry's suggestion to pair it with a fitted pencil skirt for an all out ladylike look.
ReplyDeleteoh i love the look of the capelet!! and the houndstooth pattern is a great choice.
ReplyDeletecute & little
omg i adore this capelet!! i'm obsessed with all things cobalt blue these days.. but your capelet is GORGEOUS! i def think for a normal day skinny jeans or black leggings.. but i think it would also look great with a pencil skirt for a london chic look!
ReplyDeleteWow- so fantastic!!! Love houndstooth and the cape is just great!!!
ReplyDeleteOHWow!! What a fabulous capelet!! You've got skillz girlfriend. I love it.
ReplyDeletexx Love & Aloha
You did this yourself? That's really awesome.
ReplyDeleteI think cargo skinnies or black or grey skinny jeans would look great with this.
Or even some type of dress.

Looks so cute on you SPG!
ReplyDeleteWow, this looks really good! :) If I were a good seamstress, I imagine I'd make a lot of my own clothes instead... I'm coming back to sewing classes this year. Hooray!
ReplyDeleteThanks for following my blog dear :) You are so wonderfully talented! The cape is very cute!
ReplyDeleteOh! Is that what they're called? I'm not very fashion forward and blogged about something similar to this once and ended up just writing it in details and calling it a swing jacket with a cape tendency. LOL
ReplyDeleteIt looks adorable on you.
Love the various styles and fashions discussed here.It is very beneficial for those who don't yet have a clear or good idea of dressing up to sit at home and yet know a lot about it.
ReplyDeleteKerry - I'll have to check out that website and thanks for the suggestion! I think I do have a pencil skirt but it's one that looks more A-line so I need to fix the bottom.
ReplyDeleteElle - Thanks so much! I absolutely fell in love with this fabric - very different from the things I have in my closet :)
Jean - Thank you! I'll have to try some skinnier bottoms and see how they look.
