SF Weekend: Gala Event, Moon Festival, & Eats

This past weekend was jam-packed.  We headed to SF, played in the hotel pool with the kids, attended the Gala, went for a midnight snack at a Hong Kong-style desserts place (I know!  We were actually awake and out at midnight!), wandered around the Moon Festival in Chinatown, and ended the weekend with celebrating our daughter's 2nd birthday.

Fun photo booth picture at the Gala

Paisley Gown DIY (full length)
The photo on the right was taken by our 4-year old.  Not bad, right?
The kids stayed with grandma at the hotel for the rest of the night.

City view from our hotel

Midnight snack at Kowloon Tong Dessert Cafe:
Salt & Hot Pepper Chicken Wings
Loved how they infused garlic-y flavor all the way through

Mango Go Go
Mango chunks in coconut milk with pomelo and sago.  If you're a fan of Mango Sai Mai Lo, this is a good option!

Mixed Fruit Sago
Mango, honeydew, watermelon, and strawberry in sago / coconut milk

Moon Festival in Chinatown
I was actually a little disappointed with this event.  I imagined lots of street food and maybe some kind of festive performance, but there was none of that.  The street vendors sold merchandise like toys, clothes, and dried foods (not ready to eat).

R&G Lounge's Salt & Pepper Crab
Ahem, for research purposes, I had to go check out this crab place at Ping's suggestion.  The place has fantastic Yelp reviews, but might have had a bad day when we went.  The crab had too much batter and was mushy (overcooked?).

I love our little forays into the city!  :)

  3. SPG, you look gorgeous! I'm surprised there was no street food at the Moon festival! All the food you guys ate looks delicious. I really love Chinatown, definitely one of the best parts of living in San Francisco!

    1. Thanks so much! I think the best part of SF is that there are so many little Asian communities - good food everywhere!

    1. It might have been a bad day? They have awesome reviews, but it sounds like they aren't very consistent on the crab since Petitephd had the same experience.

  7. You are ridiculously pretty! And that dress!!! Gah, you're so talented!

It's sad to hear that R&G's S&P crab isn't as good anymore. Last time I went, I had the same experience as you :( I hope you were at least able to get egg tarts from Golden Gate Bakery! And even if you didn't, all the foods you had looked sooo delicious!

    1. Oh my goodness, you are too kind! You know how sometimes a photo looks better than the person, that's the situation here :)

I HEART Golden Gate Bakery! The line was crazy long as usual and we didn't wait to get one. Hopefully next time!

  11. Ahh your dress looks fabulous! You're amazing! Your kids are adorable, I imagine they'll be your future photographers for outfits? =]
You and your husband both look gorgeous and ready for a night out.
Sorry the festival was disappointing, but don't give up. There are plenty of other street festivals with lots of vendor food. I'll try to give you a heads up next time!
Also, your crab was mushy? That sounds odd. As for R&G Lounge, I haven't been there in years. The food is usually not too bad, but the service is awful. I once waited 40 minutes just to get my check and leave, and there was no apology or acknowledgement of making patrons wait that long for no reason. It wasn't even at a busy time. I haven't been back ever since, lol.
Nevertheless, I'm always excited when I see your posts in my subscription box, especially if it involves food!

  12. Hello!

This dress is absolutely stunning, from the fit to the fabric. :)

I am thinking about sewing my own dress for my company holiday party this year instead of buying one and am in love with this pattern. Would you be so kind as to share the pattern you used? I looked through your DIY tutorials and could not find it (unless I overlooked it). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

P.S. I am not petite, but I love your sense of style and blog!

    1. Hi Crys - thank you for your kind words - you seriously made my day! I used the bodice from Butterick 5182 and switched out the skirt with a 120 x 45" rectangle gathered at the waist for a fuller volume look. There are more details about modifications in this post: http://sewpetitegal.blogspot.com/2013/09/paisley-gown-black-tie-diy-part-2.html

Hope this helps and have a great weekend!
