Lime Scallop - Amakara
My favorite roll to date. That tiny little sliver of lime packs a beautiful citrus punch while the tomato and avocado gives it this feel of bright freshness. This is the perfect bite of food.
Spring Mix Salad - Meiko
Sounds pretty tame, but see those little slices of red ahi tuna? They pack a spicy wallop that mixes deliciously with the cool cucumbers and sesame.
49er Roll - Meiko
Another roll with a citrus splash - this time lemon. Very good, but the Lime Scallop just tops the chart.
Sesame Seared Tuna - Amakara
The sesame crust gives it this great toasted flavor and a nice crunchy texture.
Agedashi Tofu - Amakara
My favorite appetizer. Pillowy chunks of tofu deep fried and served in a dashi broth. I would lap up that broth if people weren't around.
Today is my dear Mother's birthday. Happy Birthday to the most amazing woman I've ever met! Her love and devotion to her kid / grandkids knows no bounds and we are ever so thankful / blessed to have her in our daily lives. <3<3<3

Yummmmy! Looks so good! When I first saw the title I thought you were doing a raw food diet or something! Happy Birthday to your mom!!! :)
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to momma SPG!
ReplyDeleteEvery single dish looks so, SO GOOD. Due to the price, the only times I really eat sashimi is at a Japanese buffet, Todai (I think it's a chain). There I get to sample rolls, sashimi, and salad with raw fish which are all quite good. Man, I'm hungry just thinking about it!
Last year when I went to Taiwan, my cousin took me to a Japanese place where you eat whatever the chef prepares that day (there's a term for this, but I don't remember it). I ate a piece of fatty fish that literally melted in my mouth. Best raw fish I've ever had. Like you, I wasn't a big raw fish fan before, but my taste buds have become more adventurous in recent years.
Yum! This is what I love about living in Boston... the freshest fish around!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to your mom!

Always Maylee
While you may not have had GREAT sushi and sashimi until moving to a coast, all raw fish for such dishes is frozen first so... not to say that your landlocked restaurants were making it right, but they weren't using a fresh fish flown in from a coast!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea! One of the Japantown merchants mentioned a daily trek to the fish market to select the freshest fish. I'm bummed that he duped me :( It did taste much better though?
DeleteHappy Birthday to your mom! I love love LOVE sushi and sashimi. I like how the restaurant infuses citrus flavours with their dishes! I've always lived on the coast (Vancouver, Canada) and must get my sushi fix weekly...which makes it difficult for when we travel to non-sushi friendly destinations!
ReplyDeleteI am crazy about sushi and especially special maki rolls. After a sushi buffet and another sushi date this week, I think I am done for a little while. The Spring Mix Salad looks really yummy though!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your first food post! I hope you will do more!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to your Mom!

One of my absolute favorites! I could eat Japanese every day. Your first foodie post is great!
ReplyDeleteI love Sushi! Havent seen/tried the rolls you have mentioned in the post. My fav sushi roll is the Hand-rolled Temaki (Hand rolled spicy tuna). Seared Ahi Tuna is in my fav list too.
ReplyDeleteOh I want sushi. I just got back from the Bay area and I totally forgot you live there! I hope you're enjoying it so far and there's so many great restaurants. SPG, you must go to wine country...sooooo many great wines and check out bouchon and ad hoc. :D xoxo, Phoebe
ReplyDeleteThe issue with food posts is that it always make me so hungry. I live in a landlocked state (though right by California!). I still love raw fish though...
ReplyDeleteThere's certainly a difference in between sushi in Arizona and California.
Happy Birthday to your mom! And that food looks delicious.

ReplyDelete*now going to look for food. this post made me hungry!*

I was an exchange student in Japan and learned to love tofu in so many ways...that fried one is my favorite! I'm also hesitant about sushi here in Texas but when I'm back home I gorge on it and dim sum. Have you tried yoshii sushi in jack London square? They do sushi and jazz! Lots of fun sushi places in inner sunset too. I tend to avoid japantown since its pricey. Great post, made me hungry.
ReplyDeleteOoh, thanks for the recommendation! We haven't done too much in-the-city dining yet, but I definitely want to!
DeleteThank you for the lovely birthday wishes and your support on my first food post - you gals are the BEST!!
ReplyDeleteoh god these look super yummy! I miss japanese raw food and sushi a lot!!
