Travelogue: Dressed for Comfort & Good Eats

Inspired by Cee's and Jean's recent travel posts, I thought I'd share my recent trip to Toronto through the lens of a decidedly anti-glam traveler (fascinating, I know.  Because who doesn't want to know how travel like a slob??).  Not because I wouldn't love to look good in travel pics, but because traveling equals eating and lots of it.  Hubby and I are gluttons on the road.  We plot for weeks on Yelp looking up different eateries and mapping out every meal including snacks.

Me being ridiculously happy with my food & our eating itinerary (click to enlarge)
Satay Beef Noodles at New City Restaurant, Toronto

I can be really bad about taking photos of my food because I usually dig right in, but I showed a modicum of restraint for these:
Shanghai Soup Dumplings (Xiao Long Bao) from Ding Tai Fung
Sooooo yummy with ridiculously thin skin and amazing broth.

Japanese-Italian fusion from Shiso Tree Cafe
Soup, salad, and matcha green tea sundae w/ red beans were delicious, but the pasta didn't strike my fancy.

Green Tea Ice Cream Sandwich from Pacific Mall

Different Egg Tart Variants - Milk, Portuguese, and Green Tea from T&T

And my eating uniform: leggings, tunic, scarf, blazer, and boots.  Stretchy leggings and tunic allow for food belly expansion while remaining comfortable :)

Old Navy Tunic
Black Leggings
Born Boots
Michael Kors Tortoiseshell Watch
Banana Republic Pearls / Chain Bracelet

Tinley Road Olive Blazer, Piperlime (left)
Leopard Scarf, eBay (left)

H&M Red Blazer (right)
Horsebit Scarf, eBay (right, a Cee find)

Are you a glam or anti-glam type of traveler?

  1. Mmmm, I love those ice cream waffle rolls from Pacific Mall! I live really close to that area, but the only places on your list I've been to are T&T, Pacific Mall, First Markham Place, and Congee Queen - I'll have to check the rest out! :)

Personally, I'm a huge slob when traveling - Even when I'm just home in Markham from school. I don't even bring clothes anymore, and just wear my old highschool clothes I've otherwise long forgotten about.

    1. Sooo envious that your home is in the Markham area! So many good eats. I think I'd be a walking blimp - but a happy one :D

    2. LOL! Re-reading this post is making me hungry -- I'm away at school, where Chinese food is ~$8.00/box - WAY more expensive than the $5 boxes I'm used to in Markham!

I see that you went to the Warden T&T - If you're ever in the area again, check out the new one at 16th Avenue and Woodbine. It's really new, huge, and they have a LOT more bakery assortment. T&T's smell so lovely in the morning when they're baking :)

Also, there's a really good pho place right across from Pacific Mall on Redlea, but it's sort on sketch - I wouldn't say "run down" because it's not very old, but it's in a very run-down looking building, and perhaps not the cleanest place..? I usually go to the Star King at the T&T plaza, but it's nothing special -- Lately my family has been frequenting Pho Metro (Warden & Lawrence in Scarborough I think) since it's great too (their fruit smoothies are amazing!). It's next to Diane's Seafood, which is amazing for fresh seafood (prepared for you to eat there, or oysters for you to take home) I've heard.

    3. I got all crazy confused on which T&T was the new one and realized (when we got there) that the Warden one was the one we've always gone to. Silly me! Thanks for the pho rec! I heart pho and now I can't wait to go back to Toronto :)

  2. You look so cute in that pic! No pressure, but you can easily include your face in outfit pics because you are photogenic.

    1. Aw, thanks Kerry! You are too kind! I feel all wonky with face pics but I kind of like this one because it's a genuine expression (so seriously into that bowl of noodles) rather than a posed one :)

  3. I went to Pacific Mall for the first time in YEARS last weekend (I didn't realize it was that long). Yep, exactly the same except for a few different stores. LOL. I've never had those Green Tea Ice Cream sandwiches, though. I may have to go searching for it next time.

    1. LOL on Pacific Mall being exactly the same! It seems like most of the food stuff has migrated upstairs. They used to have this little fish ball place on the 1st floor and we thought it had closed but it had just moved. The ice cream sandwiches are right near the food area entrance on the second floor :)

  5. ^ I second Kerry!! Delicious food pics (haven't tried flavored egg tarts yet) and I love the casual chic travel outfits. There's something about riding boots, blazers and horsebit-printed scarves that doesn't get old for me.

    1. Thanks Jean! :) The green tea and milk versions were very good! The Portuguese one tasted like a normal egg tart to me.

  6. Wow, I seriously need to meet up with you next time and eat eat eat! Can you believe I haven't even been to half of those places you've listed? I've always wanted to go to Saigon Star! haha Which day did you visit Pmall? I think I was there on one of those days! So sad to have missed you, but glad that Toronto fed you well. ; )

    1. We loved watching the construction of the ice cream sandwich. The shop owner made a fresh waffle type thing and then deftly sliced a rectangular chunk of ice cream, rolled it up and boxed it. Cool to watch and good to eat :)

I have a similar eating outfit but have to wear it every day, not just while traveling :-)

  17. You look great - I still don't see how these are anti-glam looks! You want a real slob's travel account? Take this: Tom and I were in Spain and Italy for 8 days and 7 nights and took a grand total of one regular (school) backpack with us. One. For both.

We didn't buy any clothes there (mostly because Tom got very upset with the outrageous Burberry prices in Barcelona. I don't blame him - it's all much cheaper here) and still packed enough underwear and shirts for the the entire stay. For both of us.

If I'm not the reigning queen of slob I don't know who is.

    1. That is mighty impressive, Miss Anna! The good thing is that your tall, slender frame and pretty face don't need much adornment to look good. The rest of us (me, me, me)...have work to do :P

  20. Whoa, SPG! Full frontal face shot with no warning?! Great choice because you look so happy eating, hehe.

ALL the dishes look scrumptious. I can't decide if the green tea ice cream sandwich looks tastier or the soup dumplings. YUM. Thank you for sharing!

No way would your travel outfits be considered anti-glam. Girl, you do NOT want to see what I wear, hahaha. Holey sweatshirts are my bff :D

    1. LOL! I posted this particular pic because it's a genuine, happy smile. My posed smiles just seem so insincere and those never make for a good photo. The soup dumplings are SO good but you got to taste the real stuff in Taiwan. The original stuff is always better :D

  22. Yummy!!!! I wish we could have met up!!! But hopefully next time! So funny I haven't even been to those places - I'm not so familiar with restaurants North or East of Toronto even though that's where all the good Asian restaurants are. Ummm...ok I'll be honest, I love asian food but I have no idea where to go in the city! LOL! I usually just go with my parents or extended family and they order everything for me :P

    1. I hope we can meet up next time! I love when I have family that can take over ordering like that! You're very lucky that you don't even have to research what to eat :)

  23. You are too funny with your eating itinerary! I am not as organized but I do print out the address and number of places I like to eat. I LOVE Toronto and am sure I have visited a number of places on your list. We go to Toronto about 4-5 times a year since they have the freshest exotic fruits imported from Thailand, some of which doesn't get into the US. I am going in May and will take photos of the fruits that I am talking about to show you =)

  24. LOL, You are so funny! I love your anti-glam outfits when traveling. Though they are pretty glam with the scarf and boots. When I travel, it's pretty much for business. So I never really have time to fit in any ME time. That's when it's just comfort is the most important thing. And sleep. Because right now with 2 little ones, I don't get enough sleep.

    1. I actually have to dress down typically for business travel to work on different sets - talk about anti-glam! I remember with 1 little one, I could just nap when he slept. It's much harder with 2. Their sleep schedules are very rarely synchronized!
