Factory Cotton Shift Dress, Modern Red, Sz 0, ~$70 (buy here)
I'm not sure if there's something wrong with my eyes but it seems like every time I try on something red, it looks very orange to me. I really liked the pleating details, the cotton material, and the wide waistband (it attempts to define my nearly non-existent waist) but felt like this shade of red / orange looked a little off against my skin tone. In store, this was 30% off but online you can get an additional 20% off using code FABFEB. I'm always surprised when an online deal is better than what's going on in-store.
Verdict: No, nice details but unsure of coloring
Factory Stripe Knit Blazer, XS, ~$60 (buy here)
I love J. Crew blazers and this was no exception. The fit of XS is larger than the fit of their typical Sz 0 blazer. I thought the navy stripes looked striking against the red / orange dress and I'm just a fan of stripes in general.
Verdict: No, I have something similar already but if it goes on further sale, I may consider snapping it up
Factory Printed Cecilia Dress, Sz 0, ~$75 (buy here)
I absolutely loved this dress on the hanger. The navy / tan paisley print and vintage feel of the silhouette seemed perfect for spring / summer. Though this appeared flattering in the mirror, the photo said otherwise. I'm going err on the side of caution and trust the photo. How do you decide when it's mirror vs. photo?
Verdict: No, lovely print but not flattering
Factory Boys' Workwear Shirt, Sz 14 (buy here)
Lastly, I couldn't help but try on this Boys' gingham shirt. The fit is obviously boxy but I do like the red / gray print.
Verdict: No, I have too many gingham shirts as is and I should stop buying shirts just to layer underneath other items
I then headed to Ann Taylor where the whole store had an additional 40% off lowest marked price:
Striped Sweater, XS, ~$36
I loved the gold buttons on the shoulder and the rust color but the slouchy effect just didn't do it for me.
Verdict: No
Ruffle Shell, XS, ~$24
Loved the color but too body-conscious for my taste. I think you'd be able to see the outline of my lunch!
Verdict: No
Dotted Shell, 0, ~$18
This seemed to be a semi-strange combination of fitted and blouse-y. The top portion fit my shoulders and chest well but then it seemed to flare out at the bottom.
Verdict: No, wasn't sure of silhouette
Yellow Silky Shell, XS(?), ~$30
I was very close to buying this for the yellow color but then I noticed that the vertical "stripes" were misaligned. Notice how the right "stripe" seems more widely spaced from the center than the left. I didn't think to check if this was on all the shells or just this one.
Verdict: No
Not sure if I was feeling particularly picky / stingy from being sick but I wound up leaving the mall empty-handed. Are you taking advantage of the sales this weekend?

The red/orange dress is adorable on you! I do think it looks orangey, at least in the photo.
ReplyDeleteHope you are feeling better!
Thanks Maryann! I do love that dress and may consider getting it in a different color. And good news, I can finally breathe through my nose again! :)
DeleteDang! Good for you being so selective this weekend! And it's not just you...that red looks orange to me...maybe part of it has to do with horrible lighting in the dressing room.
ReplyDeleteMy husband has the men's version of the J. Crew boys' shirt! I got his during their mega winter sale for under $15. I could be twins with him if I bought the boys' shirt! :)
I LOVE the idea of you matching hubby! It'd be so cute for photos!!
DeleteYour outlet stores have a good selection.....
ReplyDeleteOops my phone went crazy! I liked the Jcrew items you tried on. The dresses look really nice on you. I didn't see that color AT shell but got hot pink to add to my collection :)
DeleteI want to see you wear the hot pink! Or did you already?
DeleteI don't know if it's just the photo but the dress looks like a red/orange shade. Im completely biased but I love the color on you. I'm not a fan of the cut though - the top of the dress looks a little lumpy to me in an unintentional way, like the fabric is bunching up. You've made the right decision leaving the mall without buying anything because most of the things you found were just too big or ill-fitting. Is it just me or is vanity sizing out of control? I'm 5'8 and can wear some petite clothes like they were made for a regular person.
ReplyDeleteAw, thanks Anna! I just wasn't sure if this particular red-orange made my skin look even more yellow. I don't know. I was crazy picky this day and was also feeling rather stingy. Being 5'8" sounds heavenly! I would love to not have to hem everything and yes, the vanity sizing is crazy. I think I should be a 4/6 but it does do my ego good to wear a 0 :)
Deletei feel like you looked good in most everything you posted, but great self-control! i actually love that red-orange color, or at least how it appears on my monitor!! and did you seriously have a baby?? you look great!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Amber - you are too kind! I am purposefully choosing items that mask the belly like heavy pleating / flared skirt / ruffles etc. when shopping :)
DeleteI do love that first dress - it does look orangey in the photo? But I like the fit :) and I liked the stripe blazer too and also your ring haha. Hope you had a great weekend :)
ReplyDeletekatattack2000.wordpress.com
Thank you! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought it looked orange! I liked the fit too - maybe a different color when/if it goes on super sale?
DeleteSometimes it does feel good to leave empty handed :) I liked the orange dress on you.
ReplyDeleteI did feel oddly proud of myself but then I bought things the next day LOL.
DeleteGood thing my Mom and I decided to skip the outlet today =) I do like the first dress on you but $70 is kinda pricey for a cotton dress. Hope you and your family had a great time yesterday.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was pricey too. Not too bad if I had ordered online with the promo but didn't love it enough still at that price point.
DeleteWe definitely had fun! Loved both the pho and bubble tea in Columbus!
The red top looks so lovely on you :) Love your pearl necklace.

Thank you! The necklace was another Target find on clearance. I was too lazy to individually headpin all of those pearls to make my own.
DeleteI'm proud of you for leaving empty handed! I don't know if I can do the same.. ever. LOL
ReplyDeleteHaha, this was the first time in years! Plus, I bought some things the very next day :D
DeleteAww, too bad you didn't end up buying anything. At least you got to window shop though! I am loving that stripe knit blazer. :D
ReplyDeleteP.S. Thanks for checking out my Grammys fashion post and I hope you had a fabulous Valentine's Day!
Lots of love, B

Me too! It's still fun to try stuff on though :)
DeleteI have a pair of Matchstick Chinos from J.Crew in Modern Red and they truly are orange-red - it's not you. Also, I think the Cecilia dress looks stunning on you..
ReplyDeleteOh good, glad to know Modern Red is just orangey in nature! Thanks Kerry! The Cecilia just made me feel a little chest-conscious.
DeleteGreat pieces need to make a trip to Jcrew outlet for the sales
ReplyDeleteThey have a nice range of dresses and shorts!
DeleteHmmm...I really liked that Cecilia paisley printed dress on you! Not sure why you felt like it wasn't flattering... The shells were all very pretty but for $30 at the jcrew outlet? I know this sounds bad but when I go to the outlet, I don't want to pay over $20...and it has to be silk for that price. HAHA
ReplyDeleteI'm beginning to think I made a mistake not getting the Cecilia dress! I'll stalk it for a sale - thanks for the feedback :) LOL about $20 and silk. Gotta love a deal!
Deleteoh i think it's good to be picky! definitely good for the wallet, haha! my favorite 2 items are the stripe blazer and the yellow tank. too bad about the fit and the misalignment.
ReplyDeleteYes - so good for the wallet!! I liked the yellow tank too but the lines really threw me off :(
DeleteOutline of your lunch.. my butt. You have great curves!
ReplyDeleteI really like the J. Crew Blazer but I do have a Banana Republic one very similar to it. Ann Taylor seems to be re-hashing past seasons designs into the present. I had to do a double take at the striped sweater. I think I saw it a while back.
Thanks for responding about LC Lauren Conrad. I read reviews on Kohl's and majority of the comments said the quality is suspect. I'm going to see if there is anything good at Kohl's for President's Day.
Helen
Aw, thanks Helen! I tried it on pre-lunch but was thinking it'd show my banh mi if I had tried it after lunch :) No problem about the the LC response - hope you find something good!
DeleteI agree with your picks! And nope - no fun sale shopping here! :( xo style, she wrote
ReplyDeleteThanks! Aw, there's always a sale somewhere especially nowadays :)
DeleteI like the Cecilia Dress print dress on you. I think dress looks great on you.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ying! I'm putting that back on my to-buy list :)
DeleteMy haul at ON and Loft last month prevented me from shopping this holiday. But tks for the review. I actually like the first red dress on you! Also, what necklace are you wearing?
ReplyDeleteGood self-control! My necklace is from Target. It was on clearance about a month ago - worth it to check your local store to see if they have any :)
DeleteI loved the paisley dress. Your so lucky to have such great outlet stores near you.

Thanks Jillian :)
Deletewhat's wrong w/the paisley dress? looks fine from here. i can't see too much detail that is unflattering.
ReplyDeleteMade me feel a bit wide up top? Some of this (well, maybe all of it) stems from trying to get used to seeing my um... new mommy chest :P
DeleteI actually bought that same dress (but in navy) and blazer when I hit the outlets while visiting my brother! I am majorly in love with the blazer. Although i wish the fit was a bit more firm-fitting. It is super comfortable, though, with the loose fit, so I won't complain.
ReplyDeleteHow do you like the material of the NY &Company 7th Avenue pants? I can't really pass up the $10 deal either, but the shine looks like it might be a bit too much for my taste. I definitely need to try them on to see if I like the fit.
Lovely dress and blazer pick! I thought it was strange that a knit blazer wouldn't be snugger than a normal blazer due to its stretchiness but oh well.
DeleteThe material of the pants actually isn't shiny - I don't think I could even remotely pull off shiny, red pants LOL! It's a semi-stretchy smooth cotton feel similar to pants I've had in the past. For $10, it's definitely worth a trial run in the fitting rooms!
I LOVE that first dress on you but yes I think it looks more orange than red. That yellow top was such a pretty colour too. I hope you're feeling better!
ReplyDeleteAw, thanks Elaine! I'm all better except for a slightly runny nose :)
DeleteI love the plaid shirt!
ReplyDeletewww.veryhoney.com
Thanks - I loved the colors :)
DeleteI agree that the fit of many of those things were just a bit off. Your figure is cute & deserves items that show it off. You're looking great! I don't care what J Crew calls that color. It's orange.
ReplyDeleteThanks Gigi! Haha - I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks it looks orange!
DeleteThe "modern red" shift dress is adorable (looove the pleats at the neckline), but it's most definitely orange. Would be cute for Fall! I'm new here and loving your blog by the way.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Glad my eyes aren't deceiving me with the color :)
Deleteyour hair is getting so long! love it... so pretty. i love all of your picks... but my fave is the j.crew striped blazer. i would've have bought it either because i hate paying full-price.

jasmine
Thanks Jasmine! I'm growing out my hair since I'm losing so much of it post-partum and am hoping the length hides some of the thinning :)
DeleteHi there!
ReplyDeleteJust wondering how tall you are and what size you usually wear? I LOVE the Cecilia dress, but I'm 5'2 and quite petite, and I'm worried that it will fall way below the knees and thus look a little strange.
Kina
Hi Kina! I'm 5'2 and typically wear a 0/XS for tops and 4 for bottoms. Since we're the same height, I'm assuming the dress will fall above the knees - hope this helps!
